About Us

  Dr. George Charbonneau   George received his Doctor of Veterinary Medicine from the Ontario Veterinary College in 1981.  He began his veterinary career by getting directly involved in swine production management.  In 1989 George moved to Stratford where he and his wife, Ann Coyle, expanded the veterinary practice.  George has been involved with a number of industry groups over the years including the Ontario Pork Congress and the Ontario Pork Industry Council. George has served as President of the Ontario Association of Swine Veterinarians, Canadian Association of Swine Veterinarians and is currently a Director of the American Association of Swine Veterinarians.  
           
  Dr. Brent Jones  

Brent Jones was raised in Owen Sound.  Although in beef country, Brent was inspired by herd medicine in his second year of vet school.  When he graduated from OVC in 1997, he knew he wanted to work in the swine industry.  Brent spent a year at Michigan State University as a "clinical Swine intern" working with Drs. Barb Straw (editor of Diseases of Swine) and Dr. Oliver Duran.  Brent began his career in Alberta working with Dr. Frank Marshall for several years before coming back to Ontario to work with Dr. Doug MacDougald.  He became partner in 2003 and MacDougald & Jones amalgamated into South West Ontario Veterinary Services in July 2010.  Brent and his wife Hayley have two young daughters Ariana and Bronwyn and reside in Stratford.

 

 
           
  Dr. Clint Lichty   Clint grew up taking care of pigs and beef cattle on his family’s Wellington County farm. Before vet school, Clint spent 3 years in the BSc. Agr. program at the University of Guelph. He then graduated from OVC in 2016 and started working with South West Ontario Veterinary Services as an associate Veterinarian in June 2016. Clint and his wife Emily, live in the little hamlet of Hesson. Clint is involved in his church and enjoys a wide range of sports, including baseball, hockey, camping, fishing, and hunting.  
           
  Dr. Doug MacDougald   Doug MacDougald, DVM is a veterinarian in South West Ontario Veterinary Services, a Swine Herd Health Management practice based in Ontario.  Doug has focused throughout his career on production and health management with a broad knowledge of the economics of the pig industry.  Doug and his wife Barbara have four children and seven grandchildren and in addition to his family and professional business responsibilities Dr. MacDougald has served on various community and industry organizations and is currently Chair of the Ontario Swine Health Advisory Board and sector chair of United Way of Perth-Huron. He also organizes "Clan MacDougald"; a family dragon boat team that has for sixteen years supported the Stratford Rotary Dragon Boat Festival and is a travelling volunteer with Sleeping Children Around the World; a Canadian charity that helps the poorest children of the world.  Doug received the 2011 YMCA Peace Medal for his international humanitarian work, the 2015 Ontario Veterinary Medical Association - Outstanding Veterinarian of the Year Award and the 2015 Canadian Veterinary Medical Association - Merck Veterinary Award for the advancement of large animal medicine and herd health management.  
           
  Dr. Ed Metzger   Ed grew up in Linwood, Ontario and has always had an interest in agriculture and livestock production.  As a second generation veterinarian, Ed has a strong background and understanding of local Ontario agriculture.  He received his Doctor of Veterinary Medicine degree from the Ontario Veterinary College in 2016 before joining the South West Vets team in May 2016 as an associate veterinarian.  Ed is excited to join the team at South West Vets and welcomes the opportunity to work with their diverse client base.  Ed’s professional interests in the health management of swine and commercial poultry have lead him to many opportunities across Canada and the United States.   His experiences allow him to bring a fresh and diverse outlook on Canadian agriculture to the South West team.  In his spare time, Ed can be found at the rink lacing up the skates or spending time with his family.  Ed also enjoys spending time outdoors, hunting, and fishing.  
           
  Dr. Martin Misener   Dr. Martin Misener has had a lifelong involvement in the Ontario Swine Industry either as a producer or a veterinarian.  Marty received his DVM from the Ontario Veterinary College and began his practice career in Linwood as a mixed large animal veterinarian.  Over the years Marty concentrated his efforts on Swine veterinary medicine and formed one of Ontario's largest swine practices.  In 2010 Linwood Swine Services was one of the founding practices that came together to form South West Ontario Veterinary Services.  Marty has devoted a tremendous amount of volunteer time to the Ontario Swine Health Advisory Board in it's efforts to control and eliminate PRRS virus.  He is a board member and chair of the Science and Technology committee.  Marty has received industry awards in recognition of his time and commitments to the Ontario swine industry.  He brings a hands on outcome based approach to swine herd disease problems.  
           
           
           
  Dr. Christine Pelland   Christine received her Bachelor of Science degree in Animal Biology from the University of Guelph.  While attending university, her curiosity of learning more about food animal production resulted in her working for OMAFRA for a couple of summers under the guidance of the animal health extension veterinarians.  Though a city girl growing up in Mississauga, Christine became intrigued with farming and developed an interst in swine production.  Through her work with the government as well as the knowledge she gained at university, Christine decided to delve further into the swine industry and earned her Masters of Science in Animal Health focusing in Swine Reproduction.  In 2009, she achieved her Doctor of Veterinary Medicine.  After gradualtion, she worked for a mixed animal practice.  Christine and her husband, Mark, are kept busy keeping up with their two young sons, Miles and Connor, and currently live in Plattsville. Christine has a keen interest in the swine industry and feels very fortunate to have the opportunity to work with such an exceptional swine veterinary team.    
           
           
           
  Dr. Cathy Templeton   Dr. Catherine Templeton earned a B. Sc. (Agr.) and a D.V.M. at the University of Guelph. Cathy went on to complete her MBA at Guelph in 2009. Cathy has extensive experience in both pork production management and swine health management. She established Maitland Swine Services in Listowel Ontario and in 2010 Maitland Swine Services amalgamated with South West Ontario Veterinary Services. Cathy currently serves as a Director for the Canadian Association of Swine Veterinarians (CASV) and as a CASV representative on the Research Committee of the Canadian Swine Health Board. Cathy has served as President of the Ontario Association of Swine Veterinarians and Chair of the Ontario Swine Health Advisory Board.  
           
  Dr. Kevin Vilaca   Kevin has an extensive background in swine and has been involved in various sectors of the industry for many years. Kevin earned a Bachelor of Science Agriculture degree from the University of Guelph.  During his summers he worked for swine professors Dr. Cate Dewey and Dr. Bob Friendship on the Ontario Swine Sentinel project. Kevin has also earned a Masters Degree in Epidemiology and graduated from the Ontario Veterinary College in 2004.Kevin has worked as an associate in the Kirkton Veterinary Clinic, Maitland Veterinary Services and has recently become a partner of South West.  Kevin and his wife Alison welcomed their first child Graydon in January 2011.  
           
  Dr. Greg Wideman   Greg Wideman grew up milking cows on the family farm outside Listowel. Following graduation from Listowel high school, he completed a Bachelor of Science from the University of Waterloo. Greg then graduated from the Ontario Veterinary College in 2003 and worked as an associate veterinarian in a farm animal clinic in Chilliwack, BC until 2005. As the 'glamour' of pulling calves wore off, Greg was pleased to join Dr. Cathy Templeton in swine-only practice in Listowel from 2005 until the formation of South West in 2010.  Greg lives in Stratford with wife Megan and children Grace, Micah and Callum. They are active in all the usual stuff: sports, church life and school. On rare occasions when free time occurs, Greg enjoys fishing and camping.
